STEP ONE
What was the brief?
DS Smith approached Octane Construction with a comprehensive brief for the full groundworks package required in the development of three new industrial units at their Clay Cross site. The project was technically complex due to several environmental and logistical challenges, including proximity to a live watercourse, a naturally high water table, and areas of contaminated ground that required specialist handling.
The brief called for intelligent, site-specific solutions to mitigate these risks while ensuring the long-term stability and functionality of the site. Additionally, the project had to be delivered efficiently and with sustainability in mind, supporting DS Smith’s ongoing operational growth and environmental commitments.

STEP TWO
What did Octane do?
Octane Construction responded with a carefully engineered and environmentally sensitive approach, deploying a series of targeted strategies to address the unique ground conditions and infrastructure needs of the development.
Retaining Structures and Watercourse Management: To stabilise the site and manage the adjacent watercourse effectively, Octane constructed both precast and gabion basket retaining walls. These provided structural resilience and helped protect the site from erosion and water ingress.
Energy Infrastructure: A private substation was constructed to provide a dedicated, sustainable power source for the new industrial units, future-proofing the site’s energy needs and supporting efficient operations.
Improved Access and Connectivity: A piled access bridge was installed to ensure safe and reliable entry to the site across difficult terrain. In addition, S278 highway works were carried out to integrate the development with existing local road infrastructure, ensuring smooth traffic flow and site accessibility.

STEP THREE
What was the result?
The successful completion of the DS Smith Clay Cross project highlights Octane Construction’s capability to deliver robust groundworks and structural infrastructure under highly challenging environmental conditions. The three new industrial units were completed with enhanced accessibility, energy provision, and long-term resilience, providing DS Smith with valuable operational space tailored to their current and future needs.
Thanks to Octane’s innovative approach and strong project coordination, the site is now fully equipped to support sustainable growth, with foundations that meet the highest standards of safety, durability, and environmental performance. This project stands as a clear demonstration of Octane’s expertise in complex, infrastructure-driven construction delivery.
We will bring your vision to life!
