First Bus Demolition and Rebuild

STEP ONE

What was the brief?

First Bus required a full-scale redevelopment of their Halifax operational site. This was to support the demands of a modern fleet and align with current environmental regulations. The ageing infrastructure no longer met operational needs, prompting a comprehensive upgrade. This included the safe demolition of existing buildings, careful relocation and reinstallation of essential fuel facilities, and the construction of updated bus wash and refuelling service areas designed for efficiency, sustainability, and long-term use.

The project had to be delivered with minimal disruption to ongoing operations. Whilst also meeting stringent standards for health and safety, environmental protection, and construction quality throughout.

STEP TWO

What did Octane do?

Octane Construction was appointed to manage and deliver the full redevelopment of the site, including an R&D survey to assess structural and environmental risks ahead of demolition.

The Skircoat Depot was safely demolished in line with health, safety, and environmental regulations, including asbestos removal and utility disconnection. The site’s fuel system was relocated and reinstalled at Elmwood Depot to minimise downtime.

Additional works included new external concrete yards, a reinforced retaining wall, and the construction of a modern bus wash and fuelling facility. Throughout, Octane worked closely with First Bus to ensure safety and maintain project momentum.

Bus Wash and Refuelling Point

STEP THREE

What was the result?

The project was delivered on time and to specification, with every phase executed to the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. The successful transformation of the Halifax site has resulted in a fully modernised depot equipped to meet the operational demands of today’s public transport networks. Key improvements include enhanced bus wash and refuelling facilities, safer and more efficient traffic flow, and robust environmental controls integrated throughout the site. The upgraded infrastructure now provides First Bus with a future-proofed operational base that not only boosts fleet performance and efficiency but also reinforces their long-term commitment to sustainability, service reliability, and environmental responsibility.

We will bring your vision to life!
